Local Saxon\ntelevision programmes are sources of audiovisual memory. They have accompanied\nprocesses of mental, social, media and political change during the\ntransformation and hinge period from 1990 to 1995 – and continue to do so\ntoday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Preserving\nthis audio-visual cultural asset is long overdue, as the programmes were mainly\nrecorded on VHS consumer cassettes, which have already far exceeded their\npredicted durability; a smaller proportion was recorded on Beta SP cassettes,\nwhich are now also threatened with decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the\npreservation of the cinematic heritage is increasingly becoming the focus of\npolitical and cultural action and promotion, this is hardly the case with the\ntelevision heritage of non-public broadcasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As early as\n2011, the signatory states to the “European Convention for the Protection\nof the Audiovisual Heritage” (of 8 November 2001) undertook “to\nguarantee the appropriate preservation of television productions for cultural,\nscientific and research purposes in the public interest”. (ETS No 184).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the\nprogrammes of local private commercial broadcasters, however, there is still no\ncentral project, which would fulfil this obligation to a significant extent.\nAlthough the preservation of Saxony’s audio-visual heritage has been an active\npolicy since 2016, various digitisation initiatives have led to a very\nheterogeneous picture with regard to the places of archiving, the basic,\nprofessional indexing and accessibility for science, research and re-use of the\ncultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Preserving\nthis television heritage always means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Leipzig\nInstitute for Heimat and Transformation Research is involved in the\npreservation and cataloguing of this audio-visual heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Saxon\nArchive Law also provides for “documents of lasting value worth\narchiving”,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the\npossibility of transferring it as archive material to the Saxon State Archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
